Character
Name: Ena Shinonome
Canon: Project Sekai: Colorful Stage (ongoing mobile game, plus a movie); shortened to just Project Sekai
Canon point: Aaaaaas late as I can get away with, so Nightcord's second-most-recent event in JP, which puts me at Embraced by Ephemeral Bubbles, about two months ago as of apps closing.
Age: 17
Content warnings: I'm trying to keep as much as possible out of the app, but there are a couple things I need to nail Ena's motivations down, so the rest of the app is in a second comment. Minor warning for suicidial ideation that comes up a couple times here; Ena's canon in general has a number more warnings, so if you do more research, please consult the CWs in her permissions post in her journal.
Your character's story: Ena is the illustrator for the music circle Nightcord at 25:00 (Niigo-ji, Night Code de.; shortened to N25 or Niigo), which meets online an hour past midnight through the chat softwareDiscord Nightcord and produces music using the voice synthesizer software Hatsune Miku. Except Miku is more than just software to Niigo: through Mafuyu, their lyricist, the circle has access to a dimensional space called the Empty Sekai, filled with... almost nothing, and almost no one, save for six beings. Six Vocaloids Virtual Singers, including Miku herself, all of whom are spun off from Mafuyu's moderately-repressed personality traits. So rather than dealing with the software, Niigo - including its composer, Kanade, and video editor, Mizuki - go into Sekai to meet with the Virtual Singers, bounce ideas off them, and sing alongside them. Sekai is a secret, though: Mafuyu "accidentally" created it through her desire to disappear and initially created Miku; Miku reached out to Kanade, who initially uploaded music alone with no lyrics, to ask her to save Mafuyu before she did disappear into Sekai once and for all; and once Kanade and Mafuyu together began to produce music with vocals, Ena and Mizuki were invited after hearing their music and being inspired to make art and an MV respectively. The other three now work together to keep Mafuyu's tenuous will to keep moving forward intact, as they also work as a circle of four (with six collaborators) to produce music with a dark sound but uplifting lyrics... even if you have to squint sometimes. Nobody else knows how Nightcord at 25:00 makes its music, only that it's good.
Ena has severe confidence issues in her art, and part of her journey with Niigo is seeking to gain reinforcement through illustrating their powerful music and soaking up the YouTube comments. But against her famous artist father, Shinei Shinonome, her skills are lackluster at best and her notoriety is zero, so she has to generate her own hype with bluster and drive. And yet, compared to her friends in her circle, she has perhaps the most normal daily life - she has two parents and a stable home life, a strong (if unpleasant) self-image, and gets to do what she wants with her days. So she spends a lot of time pushing Niigo forward as best she can, and holding tightly to the bonds she's made, because they're the only thing separating her from falling into a dark place. She's... seen what that looks like, more than once. Felt like it, at least once. And she doesn't wish that for herself or anyone else. That's why she'll keep making music as part of Nightcord at 25:00 for as long as she can, to bring hope to as many people as she can.
Bullet Points:
Power Class: Class 0; Ena is a completely normal human, and absent her cell phone has no powers. With her cell phone, she can jump to the Empty Sekai by playing a particular song on it, and leave by stopping it again; only her circle can enter the Empty Sekai, and while Mafuyu's (and Niigo's by extension) six Virtual Singers would ordinarily be there when not otherwise busy, being constructs, the Empty Sekai will be even more empty than usual, containing only any members of Niigo that happen to be in-game. Ena can store things here, but that's about as much use as she'll get out of being able to jump into Sekai. Shifting to or from Sekai has a slight visual tell as she appears or disappears in a sphere of rainbow light, and there's a small displacement of air, enough to move papers around. This is the only power Ena possesses, and it requires her cell phone to work.
Divine Mark: Apharos, on the back of her right hand; Ena manifests their abilities at Divinity 7.
What are your plans? I don't have a lot of plans, frankly! But it was either this, Lisa for the eleventh time (but I already have her in a game where she has powers), or a Precure character (but I haven't played those in eons and they'd all need canon review to not feel one-dimensional). But more than that, Ena feels like the kind of character that would grow in this setting. Yeah, she's pissed about not being with her circle, but... Niigo's made to help people, and if gathering Divinity helps people, then she's still doing something, right? Just... not the usual something. But there are things she needs to learn about herself that she can't learn in the everyday-life setting of Project Sekai's Shinjuku, and maybe some time around people that don't hang out with Miku half the time will be good for her. Also, fireballs for the spitfire seems appropriate.
Sample: Ena on the game TDM.

Bullet Points:
- Supplements her lacking self-confidence with fire in the form of a strong personality; the uncharitable term is that she's a bit of a tsundere. Goes loud and gets angry at the drop of a hat, and may require calming down if she gets on a roll. Personable, pleasant, and easy to talk to, but once you've set her off, you're on your own. If her bluster runs out, she gets depressed fast, and if left unchecked may spiral dangerously. If left alone, gets angry at herself, which feeds into the spiral faster. When overwhelmed, may skip one or more of these steps; or may simply become unusually quiet and docile until something either rekindles her spark and she goes off all over again, or she determines the situation isn't worth getting worked up over, and settles into her outward, friendly persona.
- She's come to enjoy singing and dancing; the latter is mostly in Sekai, where combinations of the girls and the Virtual Singers put on Virtual Lives, but she really does sing most of the songs she's put her art to, and she's learned a few of her friends' songs too. She's not quite Disney Princess singing in the streets comfortable with it, but she's happy to hum something, or maybe sing to herself if she thinks she's in a quiet enough place. A number of Niigo's songs are written with specific members in mind; if you catch her humming Engeki, she's probably thinking of Mafuyu, and if she's singing Infinitely Gray, she's probably feeling sorry for herself.
- Once she's made a friend, Ena is overprotective to a fault. She will take a bullet for Kanade, Mizuki, and yes, even Mafuyu, even if she's less likely to admit that one. Her friends being hesitant to stand up for themselves, or trouble brewing, is just as likely to set her off as someone saying something about her, if not moreso. It'll take longer to calm her down after, too. If asked, will wait for you until the end of time. If you run, will chase you to the ends of the earth (given breaks every few minutes, girl has no stamina).
- Obsessed with self-image. Uploads selfies regularly and has an instinctive response to her Instagram notification tone; egosearches occasionally, and scrolls the comments on Niigo's uploads religiously. Mad she still loses to cat pictures... but since she's still not publically the illustrator for Niigo, what's to be done about it? Finds all the trendy cafes and clothing shops to shoot from, and collects plushies, which are almost as good as cats for selfie fodder.
- As both an artist and musician, gets stuck in the "talent versus effort" divide. Her father, Kanade, and Mafuyu are all insanely talented, and Shinei tells Ena to her face she has no talent. So instead Ena pushes herself to her limits, works herself to the bone, and can't ever be satisfied because the moment she stops pushing is the moment she stops succeeding. This feeds back into her low self-esteem - if it takes her forever to turn out a product she's happy with, is it really worth pushing so long and suffering so much just to have to do it all again tomorrow? This also sets her off when one of her talented friends changes something and completely invalidates the art she's already made, but she has to begrudgingly admit the song is better for the change.
